Referrals & Rebates
Referrals
In Australia, you do NOT need a referral from a GP or medical practitioner to see a psychologist—you can simply self-refer by making an appointment.
However, please note that without a Mental Health Treatment Plan (MHTP) and referral, you will not be eligible for Medicare rebates, and the full consultation fee will apply.
Medicare Assistance
(Australia only)
To claim a Medicare rebate under the Better Access Initiative, you need a referral from a GP or psychiatrist and a completed Mental Health Treatment Plan (MHTP - previously known as a Mental Health Care Plan). This plan allows you to claim rebates for up to 10 individual and 10 group therapy sessions per calendar year. The rebate for a session with a Clinical Psychologist is $141.85.
Your doctor will first refer you for up to 6 sessions with a psychologist. After these sessions, the psychologist will send a progress report to your doctor, who will meet with you to review your progress. If needed, your doctor can refer you for 4 more sessions, for a total of 10 sessions per year.
To receive the Medicare rebate you must email a copy your MHTP and referral letter prior to your first appointment. If you cannot provide this documentation, you will not be eligible for the rebate.
Private Health Insurance
If you have private health insurance, you may be eligible for a partial rebate of the consultation fee. Please seek advice from your private health insurer.
Please Note: You cannot claim both Medicare and private health insurance for the same session.
